Racists Have Epic Meltdown Over Black Actress Playing Hermione In ‘Harry Potter’ Play (TWEETS)

Racists think they own the entertainment world. First, they completely lost it because there is a black Storm Trooper in the new Star Wars film. Now, they are doing the same thing because the iconic Harry Potter series has cast a black actress to play Hermione Granger in the newest addition to the series, a play called Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

Now, while we all have very clear pictures of what the characters in what has quickly become a legendary series should look like, the truth is, author J.K. Rowling actually never spelled out the races of the characters in the book series itself. A lot of that sort of thing was left up to the reader’s imagination. The only reason we think we know what they look like is because the film version cast Daniel Radcliffe as Harry, Emma Watson as Hermione, and Rupert Grint as Ron. But if we are going off the books rather than the films, it is perfectly possible that Hermione could have been black. Therefore, the fact that Noma Dumezweni is playing Hermione really isn’t a big deal to those of us who aren’t flaming racists. However, to racists, it is certainly a a very big deal.

Here are just a few of the uglier tweets regarding this particular revelation:

And on and on it goes. Now, if you’re a die hard Potter fan like I am, you also know that J.K. Rowling is heavily involved in anything and everything that is adapted from her magical world here, including the casting of any plays, films, or anything else. She would never sell out and allow her world to be turned into something she never intended it to be. So, to that end, if Hermione is black here, then Rowling must be A-OK with it. And if she’s okay with it, why can’t these people be okay with it? Also, if you actually, oh, you know, read the books, you know that Hermione was described as having “very bushy brown hair” and brown eyes. In other words, she most definitely could have been black, because the race of these characters was never mentioned, and that is likely on purpose, because to someone who embraces diversity as much as Rowling does, it likely just didn’t matter.

However, to racists, it obviously matters very much. So, let them cry. The rest of us will be busy anticipating the next part of what is perhaps one of the best series ever written.
