‘Not My Problem’ Is The Conservative Answer To Everything

There’s a saying: Liberals vote for others, Conservatives vote for themselves. Conservatives will fret and fume, insisting this is not true, but when you ask them about the results of their beliefs, it always comes down to the same thing: It’s not my problem so I don’t care.

Birth Control and Abortion

Liberal: You do realize that if you keep women from getting birth control, you’re going to end up with more unwanted pregnancies, right?
Conservative: Not my problem.

Liberal: You do realize that more unwanted pregnancies mean more abortions, right?
Conservative: I made those illegal and hard to get because I’m pro-life.
Liberal: But then women will have children they can’t afford to care for.
Conservative: Not my problem.

Liberal: You do realize that forcing women to have children they can’t afford to care for means that they’ll have to rely on food stamps and Medicaid, right?
Conservative: I cut spending on those because I’m fiscally responsible.
Liberal: But that leaves children without medical care and food.
Conservative: Not my problem.

Liberal: You do realize that children that grow up in poverty are more likely to turn to crime, right?
Conservative: I live in a gated community so it’s not my problem.

The Minimum Wage

Liberal: You do realize that not raising the minimum wage forces millions of people to live in poverty even as they work 60 or more hours a week, right?
Conservative: Not my problem.

Liberal: You do realize that those people have to rely on food stamps to survive then, right?
Conservative: I already told you that I cut food stamps because I’m fiscally responsible.

Liberal: Then how are they supposed to survive?
Conservative: Not my problem.

Immigration

Liberal: You do realize that building a wall along the entire border would be insanely expensive and it wouldn’t work, right?
Conservative: Not my problem.

Liberal: You do realize that deporting parents away from their children is cruel and inhumane, right?
Conservative: Not my problem.

Liberal: You do realize that all of this anti-Latino rhetoric is increasing racial tensions and violence against innocent people?
Conservative: Not my problem.

The War on Drugs

Liberal: You do realize that the “war on drugs” has done nothing but put millions of people in jail for smoking a plant, right?
Conservative: Not my problem.

Liberal: You do realize that the laws were designed to put black people in jail more often and for longer times than white people, right?
Conservative: Not my problem.

Liberal: You do realize that putting so many black men in jail has devastated black communities and contributed to poverty and gang violence, right?
Conservative: Not my problem.

Liberal: You do realize that the same thing is going to happen to white communities now that Heroin and Meth are being used by millions of white people, right?
Conservative: WHAT?! We can’t treat those people like criminals! They’re victims and deserve our compassion and help! Spare no expense!

Liberal: You know you’re a racist hypocrite, right?
Conservative: Not my problem.

Obamacare

Liberal: You do realize that repealing Obamacare would talk health care away from over 20 million people, right?
Conservative: Not my problem.

Liberal: You do realize that Obamacare prevents insurance companies from denying health care to sick people, right?
Conservative: Not my problem.

Liberal: You do realize that it also prevents insurance companies from kicking people off of their plans when they get sick, right?
Conservative: Not my problem.

Liberal: I don’t understand how you can be pro-life and not care about people dying from lack of insurance.
Conservative: That’s not my problem.

I could go on but you get the idea. The divorce between cause and effect for the right wing is profound. For some, they literally don’t understand what they’re advocating (I mean, why would middle class people cheer for cutting the Estate Tax that only affects the 1%?). But for most? They just don’t care. They know full well (or think they do) that they won’t be hurt by conservative policies so who cares? As long as they get what THEY want, that’s the important part. “I got mine, so screw you!”

This is why conservative policies inevitably lead to economic stagnation for the 99% and widespread poverty and misery; they’re the product of a “me me me” mentality that sacrifices the long term greater good for the short term personal benefit.

Fortunately for America, the right is burning itself out with rage and hate. We here on the left will just pick up the pieces and fix the whole mess just like we’ve been doing for over two centuries. It’s the liberal thing to do.
