The Occupy Wall Street Movement, now in its third month of existence is growing exponentially on a global scale and it is not going to end anytime soon. What began with a single person holding a sign in Zuccotti Park in New York City rapidly evolved into an aggressive global socio-economic movement.
True change has never happened by the single actions of government or political leaders but by the united actions of the American people.
Forget about Republican or Democratic ideologies and just look at the facts of where things stand in this country right now. The richest 0.1 % of Americans own more wealth than the lower 50% combined. The richest 5% has more wealth than the lower 90% combined. And 20% of Americans own over 85% of the country’s total wealth.
The Occupy Wall Street Movement is an inevitable reaction of people in this country to the gross income disparity that currently exists as a result of our broken government and its corrupt relationship with corporate entities. While the movement is gaining tremendous support it still lacks the leadership and coherency to be effective. However, many of the most successful movements in this country started just this way. In fact, they pretty much all did.
The Obama Administration decided to pass up an opportunity to appeal the decision of the 11th Circuit court judges ruling the individual mandate as stated in the Affordable Health Care for America Act (Obamacare) as unconstitutional. Due to the fact that judges from the 6th Circuit court issued a separate ruling to uphold the bill as constitutional, the case will likely be subject to a Supreme Court hearing just months before the 2012 election.
Given the current state of the GOP, Obama doesn’t have to do much other than sit back and let the cards fall as they will to win the next election. The GOP circus just keeps getting better. First you had Rick Perry getting applause at the Tea Party Debate for his 234 executions record as the governor of Texas.
I am sorry but I believe that the drone attack on Al-Alwaki and Samir Khan was wrong. Both of these men were American citizens and should have been taken alive and given a fair trial. But of course this is the Patriot Act in effect which gives the president the right to declare any American citizen an enemy combatant.
There seems to be an epidemic that is sweeping the nation that is worse than Bird flu, Mad Cow Disease, The West Nile Virus or triple E. It is the epidemic of ignorance and it is infecting the conservative right wing of the Republican Party, known as the Tea Party, like a rabid blood hound.
As America and Congress continue to squabble over who is to blame for the current financial crisis, a closer and more balanced analysis of the situation reveals that there is plenty of blame to go around.
On September 21st, 2011 at Jackson Prison in Georgia, an African-American man, Troy Davis was executed for a crime, many believe he did not commit. Prior to his execution Davis declared his innocents and addressed his friends and family saying, ‘All I ask is that you look deeper into this case so that you can really see the truth.’
The Religious Right or the ‘Christian Right’ is a political group which advocates for socially conservative policies, believed to be aligned with Christian values and/or doctrine depending on the particular denomination. However, in a nation with a two party political system, the integration of Christian values in political discourse is somewhat of a double edged sword.
You don’t have to look very far these days, whether you’re reading the daily newspaper, surfing the internet for the latest news or flipping through the channels on your tv set to hear the newest political catch phrase, ‘BIG GOVERNMENT.’
There was no greater moment for a liberal watching the Tea Party debate last Wednesday than when Governor Rick Perry inadvertently put his foot in his mouth when being accused by opponent, Michelle Bachmann of receiving campaign contributions from the Pharmaceutical company Merck.
It seems these days that if you are not in favor of a U.S. funded war, at least at its inception, you’re labeled as un-patriotic or even un-American. This does not just apply to today, but has been the strategy of the U.S. government for many decades.
