This week, the NPR show This American Life aired a piece about money in politics. They talked at length about how Congressmen raise the money they need, the way fundraising works, the relationship between lobbyists and politicians, and how the Citizens United decision affected the political landscape.

Corruption and the Courts: Michigan Justice Mary Beth Kelly

In the state of Michigan, Justices serve eight-year terms and do not officially run as Republicans or Democrats. However, they are nominated by the political parties. Mary Beth Kelly was picked by Republicans and elected to Michigan’s Supreme Court this past year. While State Supreme Court races aren’t usually well covered (except in Wisconsin earlier this year), they can really affect a lot of people.

Foreign Donors and American Politics

3 Federal Judges upheld the ban on foreign donations to campaigns on Monday. This decision is likely to be appealed and go to the Supreme Court. The ban is being challenged by Asenath Steiman, who is a citizen of both Israel and Canada. Steiman has made it clear that he wants to contribute to the eventual Republican nominee for President and Senator Tom Coburn.

In the first 6 months of 2011, Super-PACs have raised 26 million dollars. Super-PACs are political action committees with slightly different rules, the most well-known being that Super-PACs can take in unlimited corporate or union donations anonymously. However, unlike traditional PACs, candidates cannot be directly connected to them.

Mitt Romney’s Big Money

Last quarter, Republican front-runner Mitt Romney raised 18 million dollars for his campaign. Romney took in more than half a million dollars from registered lobbyists. One of Mitt Romney’s biggest fundraisers has been lobbying for a foreclosure firm while foreclosure fraud is still going on at an alarming rate.

Union Donors And The Deal To Fund The FAA

On Thursday, Senator Reid announced that he and Republicans had come to a deal to fund the FAA. A deal came, but it was 13 days after the shutdown, costing the government 30 million a day. The deal that passed included ending subsidies for small airports. This can be waived by the Transportation Secretary, so it might as well be a clean extension, a rare win for the workers.
