And in November, Maine will vote on the issue again. EqualityMaine, a group devoted to legalizing same sex marriage, has announced that they have turned in 104,000 signatures to place the law back on the ballot; almost twice as much as the 57,000 required.

While significant progress has been made, much work remains to ensure that all LGBT Americans have the same right and opportunity to marry the person they love that heterosexual Americans have. Case in point: Maine Governor Paul LePage has threatened to close down schools statewide unless he is allowed to throw 65,000 people off of MaineCare, Maine’s version of MedicAid.

By a six to two vote on Thursday, the city council of Portland, Maine passed a resolution calling for a Constitutional Amendment to end corporate personhood which has existed since the Supreme Court made the Citizens United decision. The cities of Los Angeles, Boulder, Missoula, New York City, Albany, Oakland, and South Miami have all passed similar resolutions.

The GOP been on a decade-long effort to reduce and restrict voting, especially among the poor, young people, people of color, and other Democratic-leaning groups.
