Christian Right Wing Pastor Mark Driscoll Says Masturbation Is Form Of Homosexuality

Author: October 19, 2011 7:32 pm

The Christian Right has much to say about homosexuality. Fred Phelpsl says God hates them and stages protests at the funerals of American soldiers to bring attention to his hatred. An anti-gay Christian Right wing activist recently said there wasn’t any proof that LBGT people exist. And most recently, a conservative crowd booed a gay soldier during a GOP Debate. Now a “pastor” on the Christian Right is saying that masturbation is a form of homosexuality.

“Pastor” Mark Driscoll says that men need to stop masturbating because it’s a kind of homosexuality. In a booklet titled Porn-Again Christian: A Frank Discussion on Pornography & Masturbation for God’s Men, Driscoll of the Seattle-based Mars Hill Church says, “First, masturbation can be a form of homosexuality because it is a sexual act that does not involve a woman. If a man were to masturbate while engaged in other forms of sexual intimacy with his wife then he would not be doing so in a homosexual way. However, any man who does so without his wife in the room is bordering on homosexual activity, particularly if he’s watching himself in a mirror and being turned on by his own male body.”

In sermons offered at this website, Driscoll also says that Christians should judge gay people like Jesus. “If you leave this church, you can go to another church and they will tell you if you are living together and not married, that’s okay. They’ll tell you if you’re gay, that’s okay. They’ll tell you if you’re married and you’re into porno and wife-swapping and open marriages, that’s okay. God is displeased with that conduct. …. Christians therefore must be judgmental like Jesus.”

Driscoll is a poor excuse of a pastor. This supposed “man of God” should know that Jesus was not judgmental, and he certainly frowned upon Christians judging others. “Judge not lest ye be judged,” Jesus said to a group of men who were judging an adulterer. “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.” The Bible says that the only sexuality we should be concerned with is our own. I’m certain this “pastor” sins on a daily basis and has probably masturbated a couple times in his life. Interestingly enough, he isn’t saying anything about female masturbation. He’s probably okay with that.

  • I’m already nauseous from this flathead dogmatic who believes some humans should judge and control the sex lives of other humans. And you suggest reading a whole booklet of this crap!?! If I was as moronic as he is I’d say, “If God did not want men to masturbate he would have put his penis in the middle of his back”. Anyway, he is aligned with himself to the degree that’s a PERFECT t-shirt for his intelligence level.

  • 1.) [Driscoll also says that Christians should judge gay people like Jesus. “If you leave this church, you can go to another church and they will tell you if you are living together and not married, that’s okay. They’ll tell you if you’re gay, that’s okay. They’ll tell you if you’re married and you’re into porno and wife-swapping and open marriages, that’s okay. God is displeased with that conduct.Christians therefore must be judgmental like Jesus.”] This was taken out of context as he was talking about being a Biblical church versus compromising, heretical churches. He is simply saying that if you are currently, intentionally, unrepentantly living in sin you are not a Christian, ie. if a man cheats on his wife while calling himself a Christian, he must either repent or leave the church. When Jesus forgave someone, he also warned them to sin no more. The one who receives this forgiveness will sin no more, meaning that his /her nature, disposition, trajectory has changed. Judging like Jesus in this case means being honest and upfront so that others can make a clear and honest decision whether or not they want to follow Christ without any illusions and present them with a choice. All he’s saying is (in this church, you can’t love God and enjoy sin. you gotta go somewhere else). Judging here means to discern and distinguish, not condemn. 2.) [This supposed “man of God” should know that Jesus was not judgmental, and he certainly frowned upon Christians judging others. “Judge not lest yes be judged] The verse taken out of context means that we are not to judge others according to our varying standards. The only people Christians are not allowed to judge are non-Christians. They are to judge themselves and those within the church. 3.) “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.” means we have no right to condemn others. 4.) “The Bible says that the only sexuality we should be concerned with is our own.” Wrong, the only sexuality we should be concerned with is the one he designed for us in the fullness of all its joy and blessing. 5.) “I’m certain this “pastor” sins on a daily basis and has probably masturbated a couple times in his life.” He didn’t say that he never has. 6.)”Interestingly enough, he isn’t saying anything about female masturbation. He’s probably okay with that.” His booklet is focused on Christian men and porn and why they need to get out of it. The booklet is pretty good – practical, convicting and not boring and not what the writer of the article says it is. Read it for yourself, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

  • All of these assumptions about homosexuals come from the one “assumption” that we are in reality heterosexuals by birth. Yet, we all know that not to be true. There is no possibility that one born a heterosexual would find a way to change into a homosexual or vice-versa, for if such was possible, knowing how humans are, people would change back and forth whenever they got tired of being either heterosexual or homosexual. Just as we get tired of eating the same food every day, we would opt for something different.

  • The monotheist is regularly guilty of over-simplistic thinking which is irrational and illogical – both gender and sexual behavior are spectrums, not polarities. Come to think of it, “christian” is a spectrum too.

  • Just to let everybody know that there actually IS a different Christian side to this nasty little story, here it is: . . . this is a total call-out and smack-down of the christian right, by the christian left, quoting chapter and verse.

  • The church is led by malidnos ipocritas and loved as they have no human feeling or divine love of Jesus Christ who shed every day in the pure-minded people avierat like us and who understand that love is perfection in us and all who truly love
and belief that all societies despise the promoan chase and is the creator of its own destruction

  • The church is led by malidnos ipocritas and loved as they have no human feeling or divine love of Jesus Christ who shed every day in the pure-minded people avierat like us and who understand that love is perfection in us and all who truly love

  • “An anti-gay Christian Right wing activist recently said there wasn’t any proof that LBGT people exist.”

I’m surprised I didn’t see any comments about that sentence.

Soooo, I guess since I’m bisexual, I’m just a figment of that person’s imagination? HA!! That’s hilarious and very laughable! I’m as real and existing as the computer screen you’re looking at to read this!
Not to mention the fact that, according to the Bible and Christians, Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed because of homosexuality. So if there’s no proof that “LBGT people” exist, then that means that those two cities were destroyed for nothing. Which means the Christian God made a mistake. Oh, but wait! “God doesn’t make mistakes” right? hmmmm… Chalk another one up for biblical contradictions.

  • @Michael, I think he’s going for something like this: if you’re a dude, and you get excited by yourself–a dude–you’re “the gay.” It’s stupid of course, because there has never been a man who hasn’t masturbated. Even icky Rick Santorum has masturbated. Interestingly, the notion of chicks goin’ for it isn’t addressed here. I have zero frame of reference there, but I’m guessing that the gals are goin’ at it too.

  • In germany we have the phrase: “Wer am lautesten schreit hat oft den meisten Dreck am Stecken”. In english something like: “The one woh complains the loudest often tries to hide that he is doing the same”.
I think there is no more to say ;-)

  • Christians- if you resent being lumped into a group with crazy people like this guy who preach hate, then you need to be louder than them! Don’t tell the rest of us that there are loving, sane Christians out there- tell these bozos to stop speaking on your behalf! :D

  • “every sperm is sacred, every sperm is great, if a sperm is wasted God gets quite irate” ’nuff said.

  • Right-wingers had a more pronounced amygdala – a primitive part of the brain associated with emotion and fear. Neuroscience has shown that a person’s sex drive may be proportional to the size of their amygdala.

I therefor posit that conservatives become aroused more easily than non-conservatives but they process and experience that arousal as fear; something they feel they must control, overcome and defeat, hence the repression and nonacceptance of those of us who experience welcome and enjoy those same feelings as pleasure.

  • As a Gay man, I have to agree with God on the abomination thing. Speaking from experience, He aught to know, because I, too, have abominated just a little when giving oral, as it causes a gag reflex when they are big and hard. Just ask God. Do you abominate when having gay sex? I also have to agree that it is a choice, we are all born bisexual and choose to be heterosexual or homosexuals depending on available resources. But we always retain the right to be gay and masturbate/have sex with ourselves when reproductive and homo sex aren’t practical. Otherwise if you want to force us all to have reproductive hetero-sex, better lock up your sheep, pigs, and chimps, start causing abortions, and cancers from birth control, and mutilate your sons prepuce so he cannot know how much pleasure he can get from docking with his best friend. Then you’ll have to mutilate your daughters prepuce to prove you are not wrong. This pastor is likely suffering from the paranoid delusions caused from his own prepuce excision sexually terrorizing trauma as an infant. Biblically, the Bible refers to semen as the fruit from the Tree of Life (Jesus) that if eaten you will have life abundantly, and that we are not supposed to waste/spill our seed upon the ground. Either plant it or eat it.

The really frightening thing about all of this is that there are plenty of stooges out there who will gobble this this idiots idealogies up :-/

  • what an ignorant and mis-informed article. do 5 minutes of research and find how often Driscoll criticizes the Westboro Baptists.
furthermore, Driscoll is not “holier than thou” as so many of you quick to judge are assuming. he will readily admit his sins, and that’s why he preaches about the grace of God.
if you love the “judge not lest ye be judged” quote, try applying to yourself too. just b/c you don’t believe the Bible doesn’t mean you aren’t hypocritical and judgemental.
trying thinking and having the integrity to put things into context before you post such an asinine article.

    • Amen. Driscoll talks about his own past sexual immoralities in his sermons. Nearly everything in this article is taken out of context. This author is not intellectual, but is misinforming readers and essentially slandering against Driscoll. But praise God because Jesus promised that trials and persecution would come to those who truly believe and stand by their faith in Jesus and what the bible says. In fact He said, “consider it pure joy…”

I just love how radical Christians always tend to forget Christ’s teachings about forgiveness and unconditionally loving your neighbor. Instead, they thrive on the fire & brimstone tactics that only make them look foolish and ignorant to the world we live in today. Good Christians unite people with love and understanding of their fellow man/woman, not divide them in harsh judgement and intolerance. You can’t make it to God’s kingdom without Christ is one thing, but as a Christian, you have to have forgiveness – for yourself and all sinners around you. Coming to Christ and not giving up the hatred in your heart is no way to show God that you have been a compassionate human all your life. Sadly for Mark Driscoll, using the Old Testament fear tactics will only divide God’s people and kingdom even further.

  • What if while masturbating you were thinking of your wife? Would that be classed as a homosexual act?

  • Only if you are doing it wrong.

  • It’s just like fundamentalists to think that because the read the Bible or have a church makes them an authority on everything – especially sex. Too bad they get so much attention for it.

  • “However, any man who does so without his wife in the room is bordering on homosexual activity, particularly if he’s watching himself in a mirror and being turned on by his own male body.”…. not…that I’ve ever watched my worked out hairy muscles flex and bulge under my tight Mickey Mouse T-shirt while pulling one off, thinking about how strong I’m getting at the gym…..I mean I’ve heard of other men doing that but not me…honestly *cough*

  • speedy gonzales

If we push others away by spewing venom we better take a look in the mirrow not to see if we are masturbateing but to see a gravest of all sinns HATE! Please please quit pushing humanity away from a loving Jesus into the arms of a all to waiting satan. Think before you speak ask the Holy Spirit who dwells in all believing followers of Christ for Wisdom!

  • Meaghan Edwards

Maybe he just needs to masturbate more . . . Wait, he probably does that by the hour.

  • This epiphany is coming from a dude wearing a Mickey Mouse shirt????

  • didn’t abomination at that time mean dirty? And it just burns me up that ppl take the bible so literally. It was written by man, who makes mistakes 1, and 2 if we are expected to follow it so literally we would kill our children for disobeying….gimme a break! These so called “Christians” are a joke!

    • In the context, “abomination” means that something was not the social-norm. It’s a big word, and people commonly assume it means something terrible, but it really doesn’t. What would an equivalent modern-day “abomination” if we use the correct translation? Well, something akin to talking in a movie theater or failing to tip your waiter at dinner. Neither one of those things would break the law, but it would be against “social norm” and hence, an abomination.

  • I just want to say one thing about this, and then I’m done. I hear this everywhere, “Judge not lest you be judged” and “let the man who is without sin cast the first stone.” Yes, these are both in the Bible, BUT, when these are used it’s to call the people to purity, to a holy life, not to Justify their own actions. Yes, we are all sinners, but God’s standard in scripture is Holiness, never does it say that a pastor will be perfect or never sin. BUT, the standard is still set by Jesus (God) himself and that’s why preachers must preach the standard (not justifying pastors who don’t strive to live a pure life). When the crowd went away after Jesus said “let the man who is without sin cast the first stone” He didn’t tell the woman to go back and continue to commit adultery, He gave her the standard of perfection that all true believers are to strive for; “Go and sin no more.”

    • You MIGHT be right however, this pastor is TELLING people to judge other people. That is where your argument falls apart. He isn ‘t preaching purity, he is telling these folks to JUDGE other people! No matter how you “interpret” that , telling people to “judge homosexuals” the way that Jesus would judge them is ridiculous! THAT is NOT the “standard” it is in fact quite similar to the Salem with trials or the Spanish inquisition. PEOPLE deciding what is the truth of God’s will and condemning others if they don’t agree. Sounds more like the Taliban than what I was brought up to believe Christianity was all about!

  • It’s only a matter of time before Mr. Driscoll is caught masturbating in public. Guaranteed.

    • Who says he hasn’t been in the past. The internet is great for doing background checks…as well as finding out about any types of immoral/illegal behavior.

  • @ Elizabeth Fox – True enough, the Bible does not have much of anything to say about masturbation. Most folks that says that it speaks against it are referring to the story of Onan (Genesis 38). However, that is more coitus interruptus – which is a whole other thing.

  • Elizabeth Fox

I sure would like to know which Bible these ‘Christians’ are reading. My King James Version, the one used for hundreds of years, the one nearly all religions are based on, the one used to form the basis of law in our country, never uses the word ‘homosexual’. It does say “Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.” Lev 18:22 and again in Lev 20:13 “If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.” This is old testament law. If we are to follow old testament law then we must follow ALL the laws. That means we do not eat the foods that are banned, we do not have statues of our saints to pray to (graven images folks), and we do not have nude photos or near nude photos in our possession. We cannot choose which laws to follow and which not; we must follow all. OR we follow Jesus’ teachings and forgive all sinners, love our fellow man, and DO NOT JUDGE.

As for masturbation…show me in the Bible where that is mentioned please, Pastor, because in all my studies (I study at home and in college) I have not found one reference to masturbation. I searched every version of the Bible that I could find and there is nothing about Masturbation.

Upon searching the term ‘self gratification’, another way of looking at masturbation, I did find reference in two obscure translations, but both times they were referring to self indulgence, laziness, and selfish pleasures..not necessarily sexual. The problem with these translations, as with all translations is that the interpretation is that of the writer, not necessarily what God intended, but their own personal opinions.

    • Lets not forget the rest of the things that are considered abominations. Quiet a few that are practiced on a regular basis by good ol’ fashioned “Christians” oh and lets not forget those that are christian and politicians. Hmmm of all these “christian” politicians, how many are living a truly Godly life? Not that many. Red Lobster anyone?

    • the bible doesnt mention nude photos one time…however unicorns are mentioned several times . do you believe in unicorns?they’re in the bible. how about astrology?cause that pesky daniel he was an astrologer and a dream interpreter. do you believe in dreams ?and those three kings? more astrology! they looked at charts and followed the star. but nude photos?not mentioned once.

      • All three of the wise men were astrologers who used the stars to foretell the birth of Jesus. Even more proof was an excavation of an ancient synagogue in Northern Israel. They found mosaics on the floor of the zodiac.

    • Elizabeth Fox, i think we would be great friends. of all the people i have seen in comments trying to discern what the bible means, you seem to have the same one i have. we should make a big group of people that seem able to read from the proper bible. bless you.

    • Great post, tons of good points. The only thing i can think of that has to deal with masturbation, and i’m not sure if this was in the bible or if it was just something that someone CLAIMED is in the bible, but i remember hearing “Its better to plant a seed in the belly of a whore than it is to spill it upon the ground.” Like i said, I don’t know if that’s REALLY in there, but even if it is, I don’t remember hearing that it ended with “oh yeah and ur gay if you do it anyway, so don’t.” LOL!

I like that you pointed out the other old testament laws. Isn’t there one that says any man who sleeps in a bed in which a woman has menstruated in shall be put to death? That too might have just been “one of those thing” that people claim are in there, but i still think its funny because if it is, well… there goes the neighborhood.

The food thing is an EXCELLENT Point too… I’ve been saying it for years. If they’re going to picket saying GOD HATES FAGS (which in itself is a contradiction because an all loving god can’t hate) and if they’re going to outlaw gay marriage and all that, they need to picket Red Lobster and outlaw seafood too because the bible says the only thing from the sea’s we’re supposed to eat is fish with fins and scales right? So no shrimp, lobster, clam, calamari, oyster, etc, etc, etc….. Same goes for Pork… Judging from the look of this guy, i’m sure he had a big fat greasy bacon sandwich for breakfast LMAO

  • Matt – I must respectfully disagree. While I would generally place Phelps in his own class, the fact is that far far far too many “mainstream” Christians remain silent in the face of his hatred. The looney toon “pastor’s” point is founded in the belief that we must hate homosexuals and homosexuality. I respect that some may view this as sin, but until people can demonstrate living PERFECT lives, I believe it to be extremely hypocritical to point the finger at selected sins and not at other more common ones. How many Christians work on the Sabbath? How many Christians have coveted thy neighbor’s wife or husband? How many Christians take the Lord, thy God’s, name in vain? Being selective in condemning sin show’s just how un-Christian these churches and their members are.

    • On your point about Christians working on the Sabbath- There’s a point that a friend of mine recently brought to my attention that I’d never thought of before (even when I was a Christian). It’s supposed to be a sin to work on Sunday/Sabbath, right? What day of the week is the main day that most mainstream Christian preachers preach? Sunday(which most Christians consider to be the Sabbath). Preachers are generally on their church’s payroll, which means that their “job” is to preach (among other duties). So, if a preacher is preaching at church on Sunday, that means they are working on the Sabbath, and getting paid to do so. Which goes TOTALLY against the belief of “not working on the Sabbath”. AND they’re getting paid to do it! So, in a sense, they’re getting paid to commit a sin, and break a commandment (“Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy”) I think it’s a bit hypocritical and humorous. :)

  • You absolutely cannot lump Fred Phelps together with conservatives. The Westboro Baptist “Church” does not represent the “Christian Right” in any way. You’re association of Phelps with Driscoll illustrates how uninformed your opinion is.

    • We didn’t make that association, sir. Fred Phelps associates himself with the christian right, the evangelical right, and the republican right. If you seek to find fault here, find it with Phelps.

  • Apart from the definition of “homo” as related to OUR SPECIES (homo-sapien), IF the prefix “homo” used here means “same,” then two or more are required to be defined as “same.” One by itself cannot be “same.” We define members of a group that are all of one kind, as a homogeneous unit. Therefore, wouldn’t sex with self (involving only one of one kind) actually be mono-sexuality? Just wondering…

    • Actually, “Homo” means Man, ultimately referring to “Mankind”. “Homo Sapiens”, the human species is Latin: “Homo” – Man, “Sapiens” – Wise or Knowing.

“Homogeneous” is from the Greek, “homogene”, meaning “of the same kind”.

    • I would think the proper term would be “autosexual”.
