Senate Republicans Reject Firefighters, Police Officers, And Teachers By Unanimously Blocking Key Piece Of American Jobs Act
In a callous and yet unexpected move, Senate Republicans unanimously voted against saving the jobs of 400,000 policemen, firefighters, and teachers. The legislation had been the key piece of President Obama’s American Jobs Act and was one of the most popular pieces of the legislation.
Harry Reid brought that individual piece of the bill to the floor yesterday in hopes that Republicans would find their souls and actually pass the bill. Earlier this month, Republicans rejected the entire American Jobs Act, continuing their effort to collapse the economy and make President Obama fail. If Senate Republicans had helped pass this crucial part of the bill, almost half a million jobs would have been saved. But Republicans blocked the bill because it would have been paid for with a tax of half of 1% on millionaires. President Obama commented on the blocking of the bill.
“Every Senate Republican voted to block a bill that would help middle class families and keep hundreds of thousands of firefighters on the job, police officers on the streets, and teachers in the classroom when our kids need them most. Those Americans deserve an explanation as to why they don’t deserve those jobs.”
The Republicans are demonstrating that they stand with the wealthy and have nothing but disdain the rest of the American people. They would rather sabotage the economy because they stupidly believe it will help them defeat President Obama in 2012. Of course there are 400,000 teachers, policemen, and firefighters that will definitely be voting for the Democratic ticket next fall.
