John Boehner Threatens To Take America Hostage In Second Debt Showdown

In the wake of the debt deal in August 2011, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell admitted that the Republican Party took America hostage to get their way and said they would do it again. That threat is now coming to fruition. On Tuesday, House Speaker John Boehner will reveal his intention to take America hostage once again in a second battle over the nation’s debt limit.

According to the Washington Post,

“House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) plans to address the issue of national debt, which will once again be nearing its legal limit in January, just as the tax hikes and spending cuts are due to hit. ????According to advance remarks provided to The Post, Boehner will insist that any increase in the debt limit be accompanied by spending “cuts and reforms greater than the debt limit increase” — the same demand that pushed the Treasury to the brink of default during last summer’s debt-limit standoff.”

Of course the only kind of spending Republicans want to cut is domestic spending, which benefits the American people. That means funding for transportation, health care, food aid, education, infrastructure, and many other programs that benefit Americans at home is being threatened. Republicans will sacrifice the welfare of the American people to protect and increase an already overbloated military budget.

As you’ll certainly recall, the last time Republicans took America hostage to advance their debt demands, it resulted in the loss of this country’s triple A credit rating. Standard & Poors downgraded the rating and blamed for Republicans for playing political games with the financial health of the nation. The Tea Party members of the House actually wanted America to default. Had a deal not been struck by Democrats and sane Republicans, America would have defaulted on its debt, resulting in job losses, government shutdown, and the loss of confidence in America’s ability to pay its debts. It would have caused chaos around the world, possibly sinking many nations into a deeper recession, including our own. Republicans aren’t just playing politics by holding America hostage, they are playing with our lives, our jobs, and our money. They are literally willing to let this country fail if they don’t get what they want, and any politician who thinks that’s okay shouldn’t have a job in government.
