Pelosi Stands Behind Sen. Reid On Romney’s Absent Tax Returns

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is standing behind Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s (D-NV)  statement that a source told him that Mitt Romney paid no taxes and that is why he is unwilling to release his tax returns. Reid’s source, reportedly a Bain Capital Investor, told him that Romney paid taxes no taxes in 10 years.

Senate Majority Leader Reid was attacked for his statement by both Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus, who called him a “dirty liar.”

Romney  responded to the Senate Majority Leader’s accusation by accusing the Obama Campaign of trying to distract from his record, and said about Reid, “It’s time for Harry to put up or shut up” and a few seconds later he said about Reid’s assertion, “It’s untrue, dishonest and inaccurate.”

Nancy Pelosi is coming to Reid’s defense stating, “Harry Reid is a person who is, as we know, A, is a fighter, B, he wouldn’t say this unless it was true that somebody told him that.”

Romney is the one who needs to put up or shut up. The GOP are whining and name-calling over Senator Reid’s assertion that a source told him that Romney payed no taxes for ten years. Dana Bush has confirmed that the source is high profile and reliable.

Even his fellow Republicans have pressured Romney to release his tax returns so as to put the matter to rest. Romney has refused.

Nancy went on to say about Romney, “Here’s a guy who wants you to pay more when I think, ‘I’ meaning Harry Reid, somebody told me he hasn’t even paid his taxes. But he wants you to pay more to underwrite tax cuts for the wealthy. … It’s like a double doozy.”

“They’ll make a judgment,” Pelosi said. “I think it’s a loser issue for him. But I’m not doing his campaign.”

It is obvious that Romney has something to hide. He has admitted that he doesn’t remember if he paid a lower tax rate than the 13.9% he paid on the 2010 return. Romney’s Swiss account, which was revealed in his 2010 return as existing but which the details of have not be released publicly, could potentially shield many financial activities from American scrutiny. Financial activities in Bermuda and the Cayman Islands, the details of which also haven’t been released, raise further suspicions.

It is encouraging to see Pelosi stand behind Sen. Reid’s statement. Romney could easily discredit both Reid and Pelosi by simply releasing his tax returns filed before he knew he was going to be a candidate for President. Even if he released the details of his investments in the Cayman Islands, Bermuda and Switzerland, it would go a long way towards discrediting Reid’s assertion. One has to question why he doesn’t just “put up” and make the issue go away. The only logical answer to that question is that whatever the tax returns would reveal is worse than the speculation about what they might reveal. The GOP needs to make Romney put up or else shut up with the name-calling and accusations of dishonesty towards Sen. Reid.
