How many of you have seen this meme or something similar?

If you haven’t seen this one, you’ve probably seen something similar, or heard a conservative blabber on about something to the same effect. The “Freedom’s Only Guarantee,” of course, insinuating that they’ll fight back if the federal government tries to take away their “rights.” While I support the right to own guns–for self defense or hunting–I strongly disagree with this as a matter of logic. Why? Because this:

Does not beat this:

This:

Does not beat this:

And this:

Does not beat this:

If you think your right to bear arms is what’s keeping you free, you’re an idiot. There’s no other way to say it. If you sincerely believe the government is out to get you, you’re an idiot.

Want to know what really protects your freedoms? The right to vote. A good system of democracy. Ironically, the same people that are creating memes like the one seen above are the same that are voting Republicans into office that have engaged in a war on democracy–voter suppression. Voter suppression, you see, is an act of war on democracy itself.

  • You’re never going to get through to a fetishist, especially a gun fetishist. I’ve been using the reasoning recommended in the article for years but it doesn’t make a dent in their armor. I also tell them to ask David Koresh of Waco or Randy Weaver of Ruby Ridge how well did their guns protect them from the government?

Fact is that the 2nd Amend. isn’t even a coherent sentence. It’s two unrelated clauses. It’s but one example that we’re way past time to rewrite the Constitution or scrap it and write a whole new Constitution more relevant for the 21st Century. After all, Jefferson suggested they include in the Constitution a provision that it had to be rewritten every 19 yrs which he considered a generation. Maybe he was right.

  • As a 10-yr Army veteran, I am offended and amazed that the same fools who say “Support our troops” think those same troops are about to turn against the country. These are your neighbors, friends, family. Do you think we took that oath as a joke?

Besides, there are more than 317,000,000 more civilians than soldiers. With such an enormous imbalance of forces, the American public could easily take the “government back” with nothing more then rocks, sticks, and pitchforks. Short of nuking the entire country, there aren’t nearly enough planes, bombs, cruise missiles, etc., to ‘conquer’ the populace. Claiming a need for a personal firearm as defense against tyranny made sense when Great Britain ruled the seas, and there was less than one million Americans. Today, it is only a contrived justification for those with gun fetish.
