19-year-old nursing school student Toni Christina Jenkins works at a Red Lobster in Nashville, Tennessee to earn a living. Working in the food services sector isn’t an easy job. Sometimes waitresses have difficult customers and sometimes they have awesome customers. But what Jenkins wasn’t expecting was to be targeted by racists.

According to her interview with the Daily Mail, Jenkins had to put up with a couple of rude customers. She, of course, did her job with outstanding professionalism. She was polite, took their order, and gave them the receipt so that they could pay for their food and leave a tip if they so chose.

However, instead of leaving a couple dollars or just leaving the section blank like most civilized customers do, this duo decided to expose their racism and promptly scribbled ‘None, N****r’ as her tip.

“I don’t get tips all the time. I really don’t care cause God is my provider I don’t worry about tips,” Jenkins told the London paper.

“They were extremely rude, but I introduced myself to them and they didn’t respond. When I came to take their order, they simply told me they wanted their food and to put everything in a to-go box. I offered them dessert but they told me abruptly that they just wanted the check. When I went back to the table they had gone and left the receipt and had written the comments. It’s all very surprising to me.”

Shocked, Jenkins took a photo of the receipt and the offensive message written on it and posted it on her Facebook page. She urged her friends to share it so that it would create awareness. Of the receipt, Jenkins wrote:

“This is what I got as a tip last night … so happy to live in the proud southern states … God Bless America, land of the free and home of the low class racists of Tennessee.”

Here’s an image of the receipt:

racist receipt

Racism seems to be resurgent in Southern states as of late. Just last month, a restaurant in South Carolina refused to serve a group of black people on the orders of a “threatened” white customer. And again in Tennessee, a cemetery has been digging  up the graves of African-Americans to give the plots to their white clients. And across the country, African-Americans face yet another threat to their voting rights as the GOP enacts voter suppression laws in state after state with the blessing of a conservative-leaning Supreme Court. Republicans couldn’t even bring themselves to appear at the 50th Anniversary celebration of Martin Luther King Jr’s “I Have A Dream” speech.

For whatever reason, racism seems to be making a comeback. These examples and many others prove that racism isn’t dead in America as Republicans claim. No person of color should have to face racism in the 21st century. This kind of crap should be over with, but apparently there are people out there who long for the days of segregation, Jim Crow, and slavery. I for one long for the day when racists can be evicted from our society and we can all finally live together in piece. Toni Jenkins did the right thing by posting a snapshot of the racist receipt. She was correct when she said doing so would create awareness. People need to know that racism still exists despite what certain politicians would have them believe. Convincing others is key if we are stand up as one people and demand a true end to racism. Jenkins certainly got my attention. Hopefully others will follow suit.

  • Sad thing is, she’s probably going to be fired for this — hasn’t she learned from similar “weird/offensive receipt goes viral” incidents that you should obscure the customer’s name? MS Paint is not that hard to use…

  • Forgive my ignorance but, when did racism ever leave? The good ol’ crackers may have tried to hide it but, since the black man stole thw White House, the crackers are letting their racism shine …

    Keep it classy, crackers …

  • What do you mean “making a comeback”? Where the hell have you been since….forever?

Media is just paying attention for a change.

“The Customer is always right.” Invariably it’s the dipthongs who take advantage of stuff.
