You can add the Hercules actor to the list of conservative “Christians” who don’t know how to shut up.

During an appearance on right-wing radio host Rick Wiles’ radio show, Kevin Sorbo attacked atheists for standing up for separation of church and state. He accused them of trying to force everyone to believe as they do and he believes atheists secretly know that God exists which is why they’re so hateful. According to Sorbo, atheists are just angry because they know God is going to judge them and as we all know, conservative “Christians” believe the result will be a one way ticket straight to hell.

SORBO: “They’re a small group of people, and they get on Fox or CNN and they rant and they rave, and I pretty much based my character [in God Is Not Dead] off of these guys that I see who are just angry — they’re just filled with anger and hatred.

On the one hand, I feel sorry for them, but then I kind of laugh at them. Why would anybody spend so much time ranting and raving about something they don’t believe in?

Then the pair complained about atheists and their fight in support of separation of church and state, which has been a cornerstone of America’s legal system since its founding. Sorbo and Wiles claimed that this effort has “chipped away” at religious liberty and is hurting the country by offending “85 or 90 percent” of Americans who believe in God. Then Wiles and Sorbo took their final jabs against atheists:

WILES: I don’t believe in the Tooth Fairy, but I don’t spend all my time stopping people from believing in the Tooth Fairy. If they don’t believe God exists, why are they spending all this time and money if God doesn’t exist. The truth is, they know he exists and they hate him. That’s what it’s all about.”

SORBO: That is exactly what it is. I know these guys must believe in something, otherwise they wouldn’t get so angry about it and they don’t like the fact that there is a higher power out there that is judging how they live their life.

According to a 2013 Harris poll, 74 percent of Americans said they believe that God exists, which is down from the 82 percent it had been. However, only 54 percent of Americans are “absolutely certain” there is a God.

Sorbo’s view of atheists comes from Fox News, a right-wing network that hasn’t exactly sought to portray atheists in a fair light. Atheists aren’t trying to force Christians to give up their beliefs. They simply want Christians to stop trying to force their beliefs down the throats of others. The fact is, the Constitution guarantees freedom of religion. That includes the right to not believe at all. The Constitution also prohibits governments from establishing a religion or putting one belief or another.

Once upon a time, I used to wonder whatever happened to Kevin Sorbo after his television show Hercules went off the air. Now I know. As it turns out, his career took a nosedive and rants like the one highlighted above are a big reason why.
