John Grisham: It’s Wrong To Send Old White Men To Prison For Viewing Child Pornography (VIDEO)

In a recent interview with The Telegraph, best-selling author John Grisham criticized the prison system, saying that it has “gone nuts” because people who watch child pornography are given harsh sentences. Grisham said:

“These are people who haven’t hurt anybody. They deserve some type of punishment, whatever, but 10 years in prison?” [source]

Expanding on his controversial stance, Grisham said that men who end up in prison for looking at child pornography probably just “had too much to drink” and “got online one night.”

“We have prisons now filled with guys my age — 60-year-old white men in prison who’ve never harmed anybody. Who would never touch a child, but they got online one night, started surfing around, probably had too much to drink whatever and pushed the wrong buttons, and went too far and went into child porn or whatever.” [source]

Here’s a short clip of some of Grisham’s comments from the interview:

During the interview, Grisham revealed he had a friend from law school had served three years in prison for downloading child pornography. He recalled:

“His drinking was out of control, and he went to a website. It was labeled ‘sixteen year old wannabee hookers or something like that’. And it said ’16-year-old girls’. So he went there. Downloaded some stuff – it was 16 year old girls who looked 30.

He shouldn’t ’a done it. It was stupid, but it wasn’t 10-year-old boys. He didn’t touch anything. And God, a week later there was a knock on the door: ‘FBI!’ and it was sting set up by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to catch people – sex offenders – and he went to prison for three years.” [source]

Grisham continued to say that there were too many “harmless” sex offenders in jail:

“And there is so many of them now. There is so many sex offenders – is what they are called – that they put them in the same prison. Like they are a bunch of perverts or something. Thousands of them. We’ve gone nuts with this incarceration.” [source]

Although Grisham clarified that he had “no sympathy” for pedophiles and people who actually commit physical sex crimes against children, he wouldn’t back down from defending those who simply want to look. He said:

“God, please lock those people up. But so many of these guys do not deserve harsh prison sentences, but that’s what they get.” [source]

Following his controversial statements, social media went absolutely insane. Grisham tried to recover with a public apology on Thursday. In a statement to FOX 411, the author said:

“Anyone who harms a child for profit or pleasure, or who in any way participates in child pornography—online or otherwise—should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. My comments made two days ago during an interview with the British newspaper The Telegraph were in no way intended to show sympathy for those convicted of sex crimes, especially the sexual molestation of children. I can think of nothing more despicable. I regret having made these comments, and apologize to all.” [source]

Several of Grisham’s fans were so disgusted by the author’s comments that they vowed to never buy another one of his books. It’s not likely that his pathetic apology will have any effect on that.
