Indian Man Walking In Rich White Suburb Gets Body-Slammed By Cops, Is Left Partially Paralyzed (VIDEO)

On February 6th, a 57-year-old Indian man was left partially paralyzed after a confrontation with police.

Sureshbhai Patel had been walking on the sidewalk near his son’s home in Madison, Alabama when he was stopped by the police. Sureshbhai, who had been visiting from India to help his son and wife care for their 17-month-old, was approached by the officers and was abruptly thrown to the ground – sending him to the emergency room.

Here’s a report of the grave incident, courtesy of WHNT News:

According to Madison police, the officers were responding to a call by a neighbor that Friday morning. The complaint was regarding a strange man wandering the neighborhood and looking into people’s garages. As the police approached the grandfather and started to pat him down, Sureshbhai said he did not speak English and pointed toward his son’s house.

Despite the noted communication barrier, one of the officers grabbed Sureshbhai’s arm and slammed him to the ground. The police statement read:

“The subject began putting his hands in his pockets. Officers attempted to pat the subject down and he attempted to pull away. The subject was forced to the ground, which resulted in injury.”

The body-slam caused Sureshbhai to bleed onto the sidewalk and become temporarily paralyzed. He said he’d thrown face-first into the ground and couldn’t feel his arms or legs. His neck was also injured.

He was taken to Madison Hospital before being transferred to Huntsville Hospital, where he received surgery to fuse two vertebrae. Although Sureshbhai has some motion in his arms, he is still unable to move his right leg. It is expected to take the grandfather months to recover.

Sureshbhai’s family is devastated by the attack. Sureshbhai’s son, Chirag Patel, said that starting his family in Madison had been “a dream” because of the opportunities it would provide for his son, However, he now regrets moving to the neighborhood. Holding back tears, Chirag said:

“It is a dream for me because I came from a very poor family and I worked so hard here. I’m totally devastated that I might have made a big mistake.”

The family’s attorney, Hank Sherrod, believes that the incident happened because Sureshbhai was an Indian man in a mostly white neighborhood.

“This is broad daylight, walking down the street — there is nothing suspicious about Mr. Patel other than he has brown skin.”

The officer who body-slammed Sureshbhai is currently on administrative leave and an investigation is underway.
