1,000+ Muslims Turn Out To Form Human Shield Around Norway Synagogue (VIDEO)

More than 1,000 Muslims gathered at Oslo’s only synagogue on Saturday. They joined hands and formed a human shield around the Jewish place of worship. Organizers say their “Fredens Ring,” or Peace Ring, is a symbolic gesture to show they stand against anti-semitism and the brutal attack of a synagogue in Denmark by Muslim extremists last weekend.

The event was organized through social media by young Muslims in their 20’s and 30’s, reports Newsweek. One of the organizers, Zeeshan Malik said:

“We the people have to decide what kind of society we want to live in, that’s the main idea behind the ring.”

The events Facebook page states that Islam stands to protect everyone, regardless of religion. Islam must rise above the hate and not sink to the same level as those who do hate. The event is to show that we deeply deplore anti-semitism and support the Jewish community.

Event organizer, Hassan Raja, said of the shootings in Copenhagen, Denmark:

“I felt a bit of shame, that these people say that they’re Muslims and they go and kill innocent people.”

Another organizer, Hajrah Arshad, told The Nordic Page, that they launched the event to show that they, as Muslims in Norway, support the Jewish community:

“We want to work against prejudice including the assumption that it is difficult for Jews and Muslims to live together.”

The World Jewish Congress came out in support of the Peace Ring and its message and hopes to see more action of this kind in the future. Ronald S. Lauder, president of the World Jewish Congress said:

“This show of goodwill serves as a model for fighting the resurgence of anti-Semitism in Europe and reminds us that there are voices of reason in all communities… Unfortunately, there are not enough who are willing to act against hate and terror.”

Dr. Moshe Kantor, President of the European Jewish Congress said of the Peace Ring:

“We welcome this initiative as it is not only a great demonstration of interfaith fraternity but a strong stand against radicalism and violent extremism, which has swept our continent… As Europeans, we must work together to send a strong message to the extremists that your hate is not welcome and your violence is anathema to European values.”

It is encouraging to see so many Muslims passionately stand against radical extremism and the deadly acts carried out in the name of their religion. I hope to see many more actions of peace to follow.
