Commuter Launches Racist Rant At Muslim Woman On Train, Gets A Big Surprise (VIDEO)

When an Australian woman launched a racist attack on a Muslim couple as they traveled on a commuter train in Sydney, she probably wasn’t expecting what came next. A non-Muslim fellow passenger spoke up, refusing to be complicit by her silence.

Stacey Eden claims the fellow passenger accused the Muslim couple of being ISIS supporters because the woman was wearing hijab. Eden says this rant went on for around 10 minutes before she worked up the courage to get out her camera and make a stand. As the video begins, you can hear the woman ask:

“Why would you wear that (hijab) for a man that marries a six-year-old girl?”

At this point, Eden can stomach no more and interjects.

“She wears it for herself, OK?” she says. “She wears it because she wants to be modest with her body, not because of people like you who are going to sit there and disrespect her.”

But the woman is not put off by Eden’s interruption and continues her rant, saying:

“Your kids behead people in Syria. […] Read the newspapers, 148 people, Christians murdered in Kenya. They’re killing each other in Syria.”

Eden interrupts again, telling her angrily:

“Don’t sit there disrespecting someone that has nothing to do with it. Have some respect. If you’ve got nothing nice to say, don’t say anything.”

This shuts down the racist rant.

Eden later shared the video on her Facebook page and the footage went viral, with people around the world calling her a hero.

Mariam Veiszadeh, of the Islamophobia Register Australia, told the Sydney Morning Herald:

“We hope that her actions inspire others to stand up against racial or religious vilification,”

“We’re not in the midst of an imaginary backlash, Islamophobia is very much real and you can see from the video it has devastating consequences for Muslim women.”

And this isn’t just happening in Sydney, Australia either. In the US, FBI figures record that hate crimes against Muslims shot up by 650% in the 14 years since 9/11. Just some of the examples last year include:

  • In California last fall, mosques in Santa Cruz and San Diego were vandalized,
  • A shooting at a mosque in Coachella.
  • Last November, headstones and memorials at a Muslim cemetery in Washington state were vandalized.
  • In December, a Houston school teacher resigned after she made anti-Muslim comments on a political talk show.

“I am so sick of the bacon-haters coming here and demanding that we bend to their culture — no,” teacher Angela Box said.

Similar escalations are taking place across the West, including the UK, Germany, France and Scandinavia. Everywhere, there are people unwilling to separate one Muslim from another.

While most would conclude that the Ku Klux Klan and other violent white/Christian fundamentalist groups are not representative of all Christians, the same perspective is often applied to Muslims and Islamic fundamentalists. How refreshing it is then, to see this young woman refuse to remain silent in the face of such ignorance and intolerance. Because silence is complicity. It is the passive acceptance of injustice for the sake of avoiding our own temporary discomfort. As the Irish philosopher and statesman Edmund Burke once wrote:

“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.
A lesson for us all.
