Rick Santorum Jumps On Donald Trump Bandwagon, Says Immigrants ‘Are Coming With Bad Intent’

While some in the Republican party are distancing themselves from the racist remarks of Donald Trump where he said that immigrants coming across the Mexican border are rapists, one candidate, Rick Santorum, is jumping right on board.

Santorum was a guest on Sunday with CBS host John Dickerson. While Santorum didn’t go so far as to say immigrants are rapists; in fact, he said he disagreed with Trump, he did say immigrants are “coming with bad intent.”

“The vast majority of people coming legally from Mexico and other places are people who want to do the right thing,” Santorum observed. “People who are coming illegally obviously are coming with a bad intent. Let’s just be honest, they coming with the clear intent of breaking the law.”

“I don’t think we can sugarcoat that, but that doesn’t mean everyone who’s coming across is a rapist or a murderer or anything else,” he opined. “But they are breaking the law, and I think Donald points to a very important thing, which is, we have a serious problem of illegal immigration in this country that is undermining American workers.”

He did say one thing that was true but put the blame in the wrong place. He said that undocumented immigrants are “lowering the standard of living for people who are here legally.” There is a grain of truth to that, but it’s not the fault of the immigrants. The entirety of the blame lies with the employers who hire immigrants as cheap labor. If the jobs weren’t here, people would stop crossing the border.

This focus on immigration is very strange, especially since the Republican party knows they need the Latino vote if they stand any kind of chance at winning in 2016. Right now, it’s just red meat to the base of the party, but it’s more than likely to hurt when it comes to the general election.
