Congratulations, America! You’re Now Averaging More Than One Mass Shooting PER DAY

Let’s have a cheer: USA! USA! We’re number one! Unfortunately, we’re number one in categories that are less than complementary. One of those is the category of mass shootings.

According to the Mass Shooting Tracker at the Guns Are Cool sub-Reddit, there have been 249 mass shootings (as of midnight EST, 8/28/2015) in the 238 days of 2015; that’s an average of more than one per day. We should be so proud.

The Mass Shooting Tracker counts any shooting with four or more people injured as a mass shooting. That differs from the FBI’s definition. They only count it as a mass shooting if four or more people are killed. The Guns Are Cool Reddit page notes that:

“The most obscene incidents of gun violence usually do not make the mainstream news at all. Why? Because their (the FBI) definition is incorrect. The mainstream news meaning of ‘mass shooting’ should more accurately be described as ‘mass murder.'”

We don’t hear about these mass shootings because they have become, literally, an everyday occurrence. We’ve become inured to the violence. The media only reports on it if it is particularly egregious or deadly, or involves one of their own. But Americans are being shot Every. Single. Day. These are all are human beings, with families and friends and they will all be traumatized by this single action. Their lives will never be the same.

Yet, we go on in this country where a gun is easier to get than a driver’s license. Where ammunition is available at your local Wal-Mart. We go on allowing the gun lobby to dictate policy. Our representatives in Washington are whipped, on the leash of the NRA, terrified to speak the truth. When we they listen to us and enact sensible gun laws?

Listen, I’m a gun owner. I keep my gun in a safe which only I can open. I passed an exam and waited to be able to purchase my .357 (which I’m a sure shot with, BTW). I don’t see why everyone else doesn’t have to do the same.

And, frankly, if a background check is a big deal to you, you are a child. Responsible gun owners are responsible about gun laws. Period. We don’t kowtow to the NRA — whose only purpose now is to whip up fear so as to sell guns and ammo for their manufacturing sugar daddies — or any other group that puts the gun over the people who use it. Or who might die from its misuse.

One mass shooting every day. That is obscene.
