President Obama Angrily Makes It Clear That He Is Sick And Tired Of Gun Nuts Shooting Up This Country

In the aftermath of the Planned Parenthood standoff in Colorado Springs, President Obama issued a statement angrily condemning how gun nuts are so easily able to shoot up this country.

A white male shooter started a gun battle with police, and then took hostages after barricading himself inside the Planned Parenthood clinic. Three people were killed, including a police officer, before the gunman surrendered to law enforcement hours after the first shots were fired.

Referring to the shooting as an act of terrorism on Saturday morning, President Obama slammed gun nut apologists by calling for action to prevent these tragedies instead of only offering prayers. “Enough is enough,” Obama said.

Here is President Obama’s full statement via Talking Points Memo.

The last thing Americans should have to do, over the holidays or any day, is comfort the families of people killed by gun violence — people who woke up in the morning and bid their loved ones goodbye with no idea it would be for the last time. And yet, two days after Thanksgiving, that’s what we are forced to do again.

We don’t yet know what this particular gunman’s so-called motive was for shooting twelve people, or for terrorizing an entire community, when he opened fire with an assault weapon and took hostages at a Planned Parenthood center in Colorado. What we do know is that he killed a cop in the line of duty, along with two of the citizens that police officer was trying to protect. We know that law enforcement saved lives, as so many of them do every day, all across America. And we know that more Americans and their families had fear forced upon them.

This is not normal. We can’t let it become normal. If we truly care about this — if we’re going to offer up our thoughts and prayers again, for God knows how many times, with a truly clean conscience — then we have to do something about the easy accessibility of weapons of war on our streets to people who have no business wielding them. Period. Enough is enough.

May God bless Officer Garrett Swasey and the Americans he tried to save — and may He grant the rest of us the courage to do the same thing.

Indeed, the death toll could have been much higher had the Planned Parenthood not had safe rooms built into the building, something many anti-abortion fanatics criticized as being too much like a fortress. Well, that “fortress” saved lives, much to the disappointment of conservatives who probably hoped for a complete massacre of the staff and patients inside the clinic. Clearly, Planned Parenthood made the right decision to beef up safety protocols, even though they really shouldn’t have to do so.

Gun violence has plagued this country for years as shooters have committed massacres in schools, theaters, and on the streets in an epidemic that has no end in sight since conservatives and the NRA insist that the only solution to guns is more guns while their Republican puppets in Congress block sensible gun control legislation that would help prevent guns getting into the hands of people who should not have them. The NRA and Republicans even oppose a bill called the Denying Firearms and Explosives to Dangerous Terrorists Act, which as the name states, would keep people on the terrorist watch list from obtaining firearms and explosives.

It’s time for Americans to get as sick and tired of gun violence as President Obama is, because prayers are clearly not working. It’s time to demand action from Congress and if they still refuse to do something to stop the bloodshed, they need to be replaced with a Congress that will.
