They had no problem shooting Tamir Rice and John Crawford for holding toy guns, but when a white man stalks a black community with a real assault rifle, the police do nothing.
A black community in Akron, Ohio has been living in fear ever since a 25-year-old white Christian gun nut named Daniel Kovacevic began lingering around with an assault rifle strapped to his back.
In particular, he’s been hanging around outside a barber shop and a high school like a hunter stalking prey.
But even though scared citizens have called the police multiple times in fear for their lives and safety, law enforcement have done nothing but ask questions.
“He was a threat to my community,” barber Deone Slater told Cleveland.com. “If I can prevent him from shooting up the city, I would. I won’t condone it. Somebody’s got to stand up.”
And that’s what Slater did when Kovacevic made customers nervous outside of the barbershop on Thursday. He confronted and yelled at the gunman for scaring people in the community and called the police. However, when police arrived they treated Slater as the threat instead of the white guy carrying a killing machine.
“They were more concerned about me than him, as if I were the threat,” Slater said. “If it were me with a gun, they would have shut the whole block down. He’s a threat to me and my people. He’s a threat to me.”
Police say they have been keeping an eye on Kovacevic, especially after he was sighted near a predominantly black high school and security reported him being outside the University of Akron.

Authorities continue to do nothing, however, citing Ohio’s open carry laws.
“You have to be careful because you get into search and seizure issues,” Akron police spokesperson Rick Edwards said. “You can’t detain them. Ohio isn’t the only state to allow open carry. If you don’t like it, you can talk to your legislators.”
That’s little comfort to the families of Tamir Rice and John Crawford, both of whom were immediately shot and killed by police who showed zero restraint and had no problem shooting them just for holding toy guns. But when a white man carrying a real gun parades around the black community scaring people, the police are all too happy to show all the restraint in the world. If Kovacevic were a black man walking around in a white neighborhood, police would have shot him on sight.
And that is why this is the perfect example of how police treat black people vastly different from the way they treat white people. Because if they had treated Rice and Crawford the way they have treated Kovacevic, they would both still be alive today.
