Not too long ago, Addicting Info reported that the US Senate was voting on S. 1867, a bill that would allow the military to arrest Americans on American soil and hold them indefinitely. Then, Addicting Info reported that the same bill would undermine the executive order signed by President Obama that bans the use of torture. That same bill was passed by the Senate last week and is coming ever closer to becoming law.
Despite massive public outcry that has united libertarians and liberals across the country, two senators and two representatives are holding secret meetings behind closed doors to create the final version of the National Defense Authorization Act that would give President Obama and all Presidents that succeed him, the power to use the military to arrest Americans without trial, charge, or Miranda Rights, and the ability to lock them up indefinitely on nothing but a suspicion. It will also legalize torture that can then be used against American citizens.
Senators Carl Levin and John McCain and Representatives Buck McKeon and Adam Smith have been secretly discussing combining S. 1867 which passed last week, with the House version of the same bill. The strongest opponent of the unconstitutional provisions in the bill is Smith, but he is outnumbered three to one in the conference committee, meaning that the provisions are likely to survive and come up for a final vote along with the rest of the final version of the bill. Congress is likely to pass the final version by a large margin.
The NDAA will then be sent to the President, who has promised to veto it. But even if the President vetoes the bill, it has enough support in Congress to pass anyway via Congressional override.
This is the single most dangerous bill in American history, and Congress seeks to pass it quickly without any debate whatsoever. It singlehandedly overrides the Constitutional rights that we hold dear. It gives our leaders the right to use military force against us. They can arrest us without evidence. All that is needed is a single suspicion. An unfounded accusation of being connected to terrorism is enough. You will not be read your rights. You will not get an attorney. You will not get a phone call. You will not be charged. You will not be given a trial. You may not even be incarcerated in a prison on American soil. The bill will give the military the power to escort you to Gitmo in Cuba where you can then be tortured.
But that’s not all. The House version of the bill authorizes worldwide war against any nation where a terrorism suspect may be hiding, even if that suspect poses absolutely no threat to the United States. This bill gives the President the authority to wage war on a worldwide scale in secret.
This bill will spark witch hunts across the American landscape. Your neighbor could spread a vicious rumor about you being a terrorist and that’s all it takes to be arrested. The military can swoop into your home and take you away. And the only way you can go free is if the Secretary of Defense grants you your freedom. America could be thrown into foreign wars against any nation, even an ally. Americans must continue to pressure Congress and the White House on this issue. If there is any issue where conservatives and liberals can unite to defeat, this is it. Contact your representative and senator and sign this petition. Our freedom is at stake.
