Ron Paul Invokes The Late Term Abortion Smoke Screen (VIDEO)

In an interview with CNN’s Piers Morgan, Ron Paul gave a very awkward defense of his anti-choice stance when asked what he would suggest if one of the women in his life was impregnated by rape. Transcript by Daily Kos:

Piers Morgan: You have two daughters, you have many granddaughters. If one of them was raped — and I accept it’s a very unlikely thing to happen, but if they were — would you honestly look at them in the eye and say they had to have that child if they were impregnated.

Ron Paul: If it’s an honest rape, that individual should go immediately to the emergency room, and I would give them a shot of estrogen.

PM: So you would allow them to abort the baby?

RP: It is absolutely in limbo, because an hour after intercourse, or a day afterwards, there is no legal or medical problem. If you talk about somebody coming in and they say, “Well I was raped and I’m seven months pregnant, and I don’t want to have anything to do with it, it’s a little bit different story. But somebody arriving in the emergency room and saying, “I have just been raped” — there’s no chemical, and there’s no medical, and there’s no legal evidence of a pregnancy…

PM: So life doesn’t begin at conception?

RP: Life does begin at conception, but…

PM: Then you’d be taking a life.

RP: Well you don’t know if you’re taking a life either, because this is an area that… [trails off] But to decide everything about abortion and respect for life on this one, very very theoretical condition where there may have been a life or not a life…

PM: But here’s the thing. Although it is a hypothetical, it does happen. People do get raped, and they do get impregnated, and sometimes they’re so ashamed by what’s happened, weeks go by before they may even discover they’re pregnant, and they have to face this dilemma, and they’re going to have a president [Ron Paul] who has a very very strong view about this.

At that point, Paul once again brought up women seeking late-term abortions (“one minute before the baby is born”).

Here’s the video:

As a gynecologist, Paul should know that most women don’t even know they’re pregnant until their first missed period, sometimes a month after being impregnated. The vast majority of rapes are not even reported, less than 20% overall and less than 2% of acquaintance rapes.

In our society, we still have a blame the victim mentality. Were we dressed too provocatively? Were we intoxicated? Did we flirt with our rapist? Were we in the wrong place at the wrong time? Are we married to or in a relationship with our rapist? The prosecution of a rapist can require a woman to relive her nightmare, often with the rapist set free because the jury thought the woman asked for it.

The fact is, if women are afraid to report rapes to the police, there is no way they are going to go to a hospital for an emergency procedure within hours of the rape.

One of the biggest straw man arguments against a woman’s right to choose is the idea of late term abortions. If you listen to no one but Republicans, you’d think they were epidemic. You’d be wrong. Fewer than one in ten abortions is performed after the first trimester. The vast majority of those are performed in the second trimester.

I sincerely hope that no woman in Paul’s life has to live through the horrors of a rape. I also hope that should the unspeakable happen, he would learn to be open minded enough to help is daughter or granddaughter, regardless of her choice.
