As this election season descends into utter chaos among the GOP, some of its most disturbed elements have oozed to the surface, revealing a core of bigotry that is becoming almost impossible to ignore. And now it just got that much worse.
Art Jones has announced that he is seeking the GOP nomination to run against Democrat Dan Lipinski in Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District. Jones is an unrepentant White Supremacist, former member of the American Nazi Party (yes, we have one of those) and all around bigot.
He’s also a Holocaust Denier. Deniers are the birthers of a generation ago. Motivated solely by racism, Holocaust Deniers both celebrate the mass murder of the Jewish people while claiming it never happened. Just like birthers and other far right conspiracy nuts, they are immune to logic, evidence or decency.
Jones had this to say about the Holocaust:
“As far as I’m concerned, the Holocaust is nothing more than an international extortion racket by the Jews. It’s the blackest lie in history. Millions of dollars are being made by Jews telling this tale of woe and misfortune in books, movies, plays and TV.”
“The more survivors, the more lies that are told.”
In an interview that appears to be from the early 90s, Jones brags that he was a “sworn in Stormtrooper” and has burned an Israeli flag at a rally. He also insists that Jews are “an alien race” that is corrupting America and dragging us into war after war.
Here’s the interview but I wouldn’t recommend watching it:
The target of his rage for this election cycle is, unsurprisingly, Israel:
“These war-mongering fools in congress like Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney—we can’t let Iran have one nuclear weapon but we let Israel have all the nuclear weapons they want,” Jones said. “This is ridiculous.”
Jones also claims that Jews “are spearheading an effort in the House to get tough with Iran, including closing off any oil exports to China that could lead to World War III.”
The fact Jones is running as a Republican gives the lie to the right wing’s meme that Nazis were actually a Far Left group. Jones has previously thrown parties to celebrate Hitler’s birthday and embraces much, if not all, of Hitler’s views. Yet, Jones identifies overall with the goals of the GOP with the glaring exception being their support of Israel.
Now, to be fair to the GOP, they couldn’t keep Mr. Jones off the ballot. When contacted for information, a Jones supporter claims that only 600 signatures were required to get on the ballot and 1137 were collected. To be even more fair to the people of the Illinois 3rd Congressional district, according to the Jones representative (who did not stop ranting about the Jew media and the Holocaust being faked long enough for me to get his name), the question asked when the signatures were gathered was “Do you support bringing the troops home and refuse to start a new war with Iran.” This may not have been a particularly honest sales pitch for Jones but, tactically, was very smart. According to the representative (before he started yelling about the how the GOP was in bed with the Jew media to get their approval), only 4 people said no.
The Illinois GOP has officially announced it will not support Jones’ candidacy. This did not seem to deter the Jones campaign which has proudly announced that it will top the ballot in the primary due to the “first come, first serve” nature of the process that allowed Jones to get on the ballot in the first place.
Just when you think it can’t get any stranger in the world of Republican politics…
