Ed Klein, an author whose latest book, The Amateur: Obama In The White House, said to Fox’s Brian Kilmeade that he believes Hillary Clinton will seriously consider running for president in 2016. Klein commented “I don’t want to sound anti-feminist here but she’s not looking good these days. She’s looking overweight and she’s looking tired…” Kilmeade chimes in with “Looks like she’s not trying, to be honest.” Klein goes on to say“ I think she’s going to take some time off, get back into shape and if her health holds out and that’s a big if…she and Bill, two for the price of one, will run in 2016.”
These men also mention that Clinton will be 69 years old in the next election. It’s not unheard of for an opposing party to pick on a potential candidate, or even one who is currently running, and comment on age. McCain’s age at the time, 71, was certainly a target for those who specifically feared Palin the President. But there is one key difference when that candidate is a woman. Her appearance is almost ALWAYS considered an important factor in how she will perform her job description. If you listen to the audio, Klein makes it sound by his tone that she’s got one foot in the grave and he can tell, just by looking at her, that she might not even be alive to run in the next election.
Admittedly, Bill Clinton’s weight was often an opportunity for the media to ridicule him, but that ridicule was never used to describe how he would run the country. These same kinds of sexist comments were made about Hillary in 2008. She was criticized for her wardrobe, her eyes welling up with tears and her credentials as a senator.
Klein states that he doesn’t want to sound anti-feminist, then goes on to say something sexist. His latest book smearing Obama is self-published and makes that tired old claim that our president was born on foreign soil and is a practicing Muslim. Klein also promoted a “shameful conspiracy theory that Bill Clinton raped Hillary.” He is a discredited author with a history of presenting falsehoods.
I am a woman, a feminist and an activist/spokeswoman for women’s rights. One of the comments that comes up time and again about the Rock The Slut Vote campaign is that liberal women are ugly. EVEN if that were true, which it isn’t, it’s immature to make a blanket statement like that about any group. It has NOTHING to do with the work we accomplish. I am sick of women being judged by their physical appearance when men who are overweight, unattractive and tired looking are left alone and even praised. It’s yet another way to keep women less important, less valid and continues the myth that how a woman looks will determine how she will execute her duties in the position she holds.
