This week on The Dallas Morning News’ Lone Star Politics show, GOP strategist Matt Mackowiak made a few dismissive and offensive comments about abortion, rape and incest.

Check out the video of the segment below:

When Democratic strategist Matt Angle touched on how Wendy Davis’ opponent — Republican candidate Greg Abbott — wanted to outlaw abortion even in cases of rape and incest, conservative Matt Mackowiak defended Abbott.

In response, Mackowiak argued:

“Texas is a pro-life state. We can get into minor issues that are one percent or two percent the problem. But ultimately, Texas is a strong pro-life state. Abbott would love to fight this campaign on that issue alone from here on out but Wendy knows that’s not strategically wise.” (source)

Angle then jumped in to say:

“That’s the first time I’ve heard rape or incest called a ‘minor issue.” (source)

Mackowiak elaborated:

“It’s minor in terms of the percentage of cases. That’s all I’m saying.” (source)

Angle countered:

“A victim of rape or incest is not a minor problem.” (source)

After the broadcast, Wendy Davis reacted to what Mackowiak said on Twitter:

On Monday, Davis spokesperson Zac Petkanas said Mackowiak’s comments were “disgusting.”

“Rape and incest are horrific crimes, not ‘minor issues.’ This disgusting viewpoint illustrates exactly why Greg Abbott is so out of touch when he says he would make abortion illegal even in the cases of rape and incest.” [source]

Mackowiak may have even embarrassed the Republican candidate. According to an Abbott spokesperson, Mackowiak is not advising or employed by the Republican’s campaign.
