Kansas Republican Bill Literally Bans Poor People From Having Lives

Kansas Republicans have passed a bill that would ban poor people from enjoying most amenities in our modern civilization.

In yet another salvo fired in their war against the poor, Republicans in the Kansas state Senate and House literally want to ban welfare recipients from living their lives.

House Bill 2258 is the latest effort by the GOP to degrade and humiliate poor people to make them feel less like human beings.

It bans TANF (Temporary Assistance To Needy Families) recipients from purchasing “alcohol, cigarettes, tobacco products, lottery tickets, concert tickets, professional or collegiate sporting event tickets or tickets for other entertainment
events intended for the general public…”

Furthermore, it prohibits TANF recipients from spending at establishments such as,

casino, gaming establishment, jewelry store, tattoo parlor, massage parlor, body piercing parlor, spa, nail salon, lingerie shop, tobacco paraphernalia store, vapor cigarette store, psychic or fortune-telling business, bail bond company, video arcade, movie theater, swimming pool, cruise ship, theme park, dog or horse racing facility…

So if a TANF recipient wants to spend time with their kids at the swimming pool or at the movies, they are banned from doing so.

The bill also restricts TANF recipients from withdrawing more than $25 a day from ATMs.

Governor Sam Brownback is expected to sign the legislation, but Democrats are decrying the bill as a cruel way to treat human beings.

Democratic state Rep. Carolyn Bridges summed up the intent of this GOP bill perfectly.

“I just think we are simply saying to people, ‘If you are asking for assistance in this state, you’re sort of less than other people and we’re going to tell you how and where to spend your money.’”

Democratic state Senator Laura Kelly echoed Bridges’ criticism, saying

“Now what we want to do is take the same mean-spirited policies that we’ve implemented over the years and we want to codify them. I can only assume that the motive behind this is truly malice of intent.”

Indeed, that’s exactly what Republicans are doing. Despite claiming that they want government to stay out of our personal lives, the GOP hypocritically has no problem making laws that legislate the personal lives of poor people. This is the very definition of government intrusion. But Republican state Senator Michael O’Donnell says this violation of personal liberty is about giving poor people “a great life,” even though poor people are basically being restricted to just purchasing food while being forced to live like hermits.

This kind of government intrusion is also being pushed by Republicans in Missouri, where a bill has been introduced that would ban poor people from purchasing food items such as seafood and steak.

Republicans are waging a vicious war on poor people and they are only getting crueller by the day. What’s next, GOP? Banning the poor from breathing?
