Florida Governor Rick Scott Now Bragging He Used His Mother’s Death As Political Ruse

If Floridians who saw Governor Rick Scott’s emotional change of heart about denying health care to millions of people in his state after the death of his mother are wondering why it’s taking so long for him to follow through, the answer is simple: Scott was lying and he knew the Obama administration would buy it if he dragged his dead mother into it.

In a move that would likely make Machiavelli blush, CBS Miami is reporting that Scott is openly flaunting the fact that his “change of heart” was nothing more than a political ruse to trick Obama into giving him more leeway to implement his privatization of health care coverage under the guise of showing interest in expanding Medicaid (currently standing in the way of covering close to one million Floridians).

Scott said his mother’s death changed his perspective and he could no longer “in good conscience” oppose expanding health care coverage to nearly 1 million Floridians.

Scott conceded this week that was all a ruse. He now says his support for Medicaid expansion was a calculated move designed to win support from the Obama administration for the state’s proposal to hand over control of Medicaid to private insurance companies. At the time, he denied that his support was tied to a deal with the federal government.

Using your mother’s death to trick your political enemies into letting you continue preventing people from getting health insurance? In the often cutthroat world of politics, that might just be the coldest power play ever pulled. Certainly, most politicians not currently starring in House of Cards would never brazenly admit to it. But Scott seems to think it makes him look savvy.

Following his agreement with the federal government to accept more money for his private health care plan, Scott has dropped the act and is now saying that he will not expand Medicaid after all. With cash in hand to fund his conservative vision, Scott is back to bashing Obama and the healthcare overhaul. Shocking!

In fact, recently he took things a step further and announced that he’s suing the federal government for making his state follow the health care laws.

Florida under Rick Scott has become the very symbol of Republicans cutting off their nose to spite Obama. Unlike several of his fellow holdouts, Scott has done everything he can to refuse any part of working with the health care laws. It’s led to Florida lagging behind in healthcare coverage (go figure) and saddled massive debts.

In other news– Rick Scott’s “Obamacare alternative” has cost the taxpayers over one million dollars and, as of late February, only signed up 49 people.

I guess there’s failure and then there’s Rick Scott failure, just like there’s evil and then there’s “Rick Scott using his mother’s passing for political advantage” evil.
