If you haven’t heard, in their desperation to disown the anti-abortion Planned Parenthood terrorist, our friends on the Right have been peddling a ridiculous tale that Robert Lewis Dear is not a crazed anti-abortion, Obama-hating right-wing terrorist — he’s a “transgendered” left-wing activist. Sound ridiculous? It is. It’s almost as ridiculous as the fraudulent claim that Michael Brown fractured Officer Darren Wilson’s eye socket. In fact, both lies come from the exact same source — delusional extreme-Right blogger Jim Hoft.
Hoft, commonly known as the “Dumbest Man on the Internet” (Go ahead, Google it. You know you want to.), found Dear’s voter registration. Dear’s registration contains a fairly minor data entry error (or, of course, there is the possibility that he is simply too stupid to check the correct box on the form). Rather than “male,” it reads “female.” To most, this would not be a problem, but conservatives ate this information up.
The Right Scoop picked up the story, for instance, and celebrated the simple clerical error as a huge win for conservatives everywhere:
“According to voting records that people are finding on the internet, the Colorado shooter Robert L. Dear, was born a woman. No seriously.”
“Now this could be a mistake because this dude does not look like a transgender,” “soopermexican” concedes. “Then again maybe he/she is just really good at it. Who knows?” Another conservative blog called this shocking development “bad news for libs,” while another asked, “how are the libtards going to spin this one?”
Others on the Right claim — based on debunked early rumors — that Dear was attempting to rob the nearby Chase bank and simply popped into Planned Parenthood to hide. Responding to these rumors, Chase clarified that the incident did not in any way involve the bank and police released a statement explaining that the “entire incident” occurred at Planned Parenthood.
In addition, transcripts of police communications indicate that in preparation for the attack Dear set up propane tanks in the parking lot. Then, of course, there’s the little matter of Dear saying “no more baby parts” after he was captured and his cute little habit of distributing anti-Obama pamphlets to neighbors. A profile of the shooter in the New York Times describes Dear as “generally conservative” and “religious” — a man who ” believed wholeheartedly in the Bible” and bragged about reading it “cover to cover” — though his ex-wife says he is not “fixated” on it. She also confirmed that he was anti-abortion.
In short, you would have to be an absolute dolt to believe the tale of the bank-robbing transgender activist who ducked into Planned Parenthood to hide from police.
Enter Ted Cruz…
Yes, the tale of the transgender terrorist made it to future 2016 washout Ted Cruz, who just ran with it. At a campaign stop in Iowa on Sunday, Cruz rejected the very notion that the Right’s lies and extreme rhetoric about Planned Parenthood had anything to do with the attack, instead complaining about “some vicious rhetoric on the left blaming those who are pro-life.”
“The media promptly wants to blame him on the pro-life movement when at this point there’s very little evidence to indicate that,” Cruz said, completely ignoring “no more baby parts” or the fact that the attack occurred at Planned Parenthood. Reminded about Dear’s “baby parts” remark, Cruz countered:
“It’s also been reported that he was registered as an independent and a woman and a transgendered leftist activist. If that’s what he is, I don’t think it’s fair to blame on the rhetoric on the left. This is a murderer.”
“We know that he was a man who was registered to vote as a woman,” Cruz said, urging the media not to “jump to conclusions” they might arrive to when presented with the facts.
After Cruz’s statement, Hoft used the Texas Senator’s remarks — which were derived from his story — to justify his initial report. [It’s almost terribly beautiful to watch the Circle of Stupidity in action, isn’t it?]
Sorry, conservatives, you own this one. Your dangerous rhetoric, lies about Planned Parenthood “selling baby parts” and calls for “patriots” to rise up and make abortion doctors “afraid for their life” have caused this. Witness the monster you have created, — there will surely be more like him.
