Sanders Eviscerated Republicans Trying To Defund Planned Parenthood In Fiery Senate Speech (VIDEO)

Just one day after Sen. Bernie Sanders underwent minor surgery, he was already back on the Senate floor blasting his Republican colleagues for their ineptitude and lack of compassion towards their fellow Americans.

At issue was the GOP’s latest attempt to defund Obamacare. As Sanders notes, the defunding bill was a pointless gesture of┬áRepublican grandstanding and represented an insult to the democratic process. It was purely symbolic – President Obama would, of course, veto the bill immediately – but it also reflected the deeply troubling nature of the modern Republican Party. They’ve become┬áso consumed with anti-Obama hatred that they would try to – symbolically or not – kick 17 million people off of health insurance just to score a few political points.

However, even worse, the bill also included an extra portion of political opportunism. Not satisfied with merely causing 17 million people to lose their healthcare, Republicans added a rider that would defund Planned Parenthood – an organization that helps millions of low-income women with everything from STD testing to cancer screenings. In light of a recent mass shooting by a right-wing Christian terrorist who was inspired by the right’s anti-abortion rhetoric, one might think Republicans would be willing to give it a rest – instead they only became more aggressive.

This isn’t the first time Sanders has called out conservative politicians for their violent rhetoric. In the days following the shooting in Colorado Springs, while most pundits and politicians were remaining silent, the senator didn’t mince words over how the “vicious and unsubstantiated” rhetoric hurled at Planned Parenthood has poisoned the abortion debate and led to dangerous consequences.

He echoed that lesson on the senate floor looking many of those same irresponsible politicians squarely in the eyes and holding them accountable. At the same time, he stood up for Planned Parenthood, as the healthcare organization continues to be the subject of slanderous attacks.

“In my view, instead of trying to defund Planned Parenthood, we should be expanding funding so that every woman in this country gets the healthcare that she needs.”

Sanders, like many of us, is fed up with the way congressional Republicans continue to obsess over hurting Obama’s legacy rather than govern.

“The reason why the American people are angry and the reason why the Congress is so unpopular is that the Congress is not addressing the real problems that are impacting their lives each and every day. At a time when the rich are getting richer, poverty is increasing, and the middle class has been in a 40-year decline, we need a budget that improves the lives of all Americans, not just the people on the top.”

Once again, Sanders has shown that there are a few politicians left in Washington that are still willing to stand up and say the right things even when it may not be easy. He also reminds us of the cowardly ones who do not.
