The DNC Just Sabotaged Bernie Sanders’ Entire Campaign – Here Is How They Did It

It’s no secret to anyone following the Democratic primary process this cycle that the DNC chairwoman, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, has come under heavy criticism for being biased towards Hillary Clinton. It’s fine if she likes Hillary, but her refusal to have more than 6 debates, and scheduling them in very strange time slots, yields low viewership, which is bad for Bernie Sanders, and comes courtesy of — you guessed it — the DNC.

In a late night decision, the DNC made a crippling move on the Sanders campaign by cutting off its access to the DNC nationwide voter rolls. This move has basically shut down Bernie’s ability to plan campaign events and voter outreach operations, coming 44 days before the critical Iowa caucus and a bit over 50 days from the New Hampshire primary.

Rival campaigns have firewalls in the software they use to manage voter rolls with the DNC, to prevent them from seeing the proprietary data gathered by opponents. This safeguard failed, causing the incident to occur.

DNC officials have accused the Sanders campaign of improperly accessing confidential voter information gathered by the Hillary Clinton campaign. The Sanders campaign immediately addressed the issue, saying that a software vendor hired by the DNC was responsible for a glitch that allowed accidental access. Jeff Weaver, Sanders’ campaign manager, said one staffer was fired over the incident.

The DNC quickly punished the Sanders campaign by removing access to the vital data and said that it will not be restored until the Sanders campaign provides an explanation as well as gives “assurances” all Clinton data has been deleted.

The following part is important. NGP VAN, the vendor that handles the master file of campaign voter rolls and manages security to keep campaign data private, already said the incident was their fault from a software patch they applied. The process briefly rendered the proprietary information of each campaign viewable to others, and a full audit will be conducted.

Michael Briggs, an aide for the Sanders campaign, said this isn’t the first time they’ve run across security issues with the DNC’s master voter file:

“On more than one occasion, the vendor has dropped the firewall between the data of different Democratic campaigns. Our campaign months ago alerted the DNC to the fact that campaign data was being made available to other campaigns,. At that time our campaign did not run to the media, relying instead on assurances from the vendor.”

The DNC already has its explanation. It has had it for months because it knew that this was an ongoing issue. The vendor they hired explained it was a software error on their end. What more are they waiting to hear?

How is the Sanders campaign supposed to provide any kind of proof that they destroyed something they might not have ever had in the first place? Does the DNC just want Bernie to personally swear on a Bible?

Let me be clear on this. Neither I or this website are endorsing Bernie or Hillary. I will support the eventual nominee of the Democratic party, despite who I might personally vote for in the primary process.

This isn’t really about either candidate. It is about the DNC being aware of a history of software security problems for months, their campaign-ending punishment that only happened this one time out of all the other times they knew the software security failed, and the arguably impossible nature of their demands to have Sanders’ access to the data restored. It would be just as unfair and improper of the DNC to take such drastic and immediate steps to punish the Clinton or O’Malley campaigns.

The DNC has got to be held to a higher standard than this. We are Democrats. These kinds of games are for Republicans.
